Back Cover
With a new sketchbook comes new covers to decorate; this is the beginning of the back cover of my new cahier pocket molie.
This is my GTD (“get things done”) moleskine, which I use make to do & task lists. I thought this quote was apropos. A word of advice if you ever use rub-on transfers: Make sure you varnish the cover or the letters will all fall off in a day or 2 =/
With the Arthouse Co-op SketchBook Project, poetry works and 3D portfolios to fill I have only just finished my second Moleskine Large Sketchbook. I did various “A” drawings in the first inside covers so I figured I would continue the theme. Tomorrow I will post up the back cover B’s.
The Back Cover
As has become my custom, my stream-of-thought impressions/poems/daily musings start in the front of the book and my artwork starts in the back, so the inside of the back cover was the next thing to get decorated. This is some sharpie marker and some micron pen.
The Next Best Thing
I just finished up a pocket cahier and I’ve started the next one. This is abstract swirls of sharpie marker inside the front cover. On occasion I name by little sketchbooks and this one is The Next Best Thing.
Because the Night
The back cover of my ‘sleepless’ molie; I’ve had these lyrics stuck in my head for the past several days. In 1978 Patti Smith recorded a song called ‘Because the Night.’ The song was written and recorded originally by Bruce Springsteen but he didn’t include it on ‘Darkness on the Edge of Town,’ the album he was working on at the time (in the studio next door to where Patti Smith was recording, which is how she was introduced to it). Springtseen just released an album of some of his ‘lost’ work from the Darkness sessions and I’ve had it stuck in my head since I heard it yesterday. It seemed like a fitting last note to my ‘sleepless’ journey.

I have started a traveling community sketchbook for SketchUcation members. I will draw in the first panel then I send it to someone else and hopefully within a year or so it will be filled up by SCF members. I sure hope it goes over well and does not get lost or forgotten about. However with over 56,000 members if only 1% of the 10% who generally participate we should get a good response.
I drew the cover initials SCF then had a friend who has a laser etcher (with proper ventilation) etch the cover of the Moleskine. If you ever wanted your hardback Moleskine etched contact me through my blog and I will get you in contact with the guy who did this for me.
