I think this could be interesting to see. Give us your all-time favourites list of painters. Whether you like them, or you think they were the most important, or the most under-rated, or most influential (on yourself or art in general), or whatever other reason. Who would you like on the list? Then Leo or Bob could, say in a semester or so, compile the list of the site's most favoured painters in hystory of art. The list doesn't need to be in order of preference (or it also could be, if your think it's better idea).
For the start, here is my list:
Vermeer (Johannes-Jan Vermeer van Delft)
Paul Klee
Henri Matisse
Claude Monet
Leonardo da Vinci
Salvador Dali
Rene Magritte
Raoul Dufy
Pablo Picasso/Georges Braque
Piet Mondrian
It's hard to end there... whatcanIsay - it's tough task...

If I had to pick one:
- Maurits Cornelis Escher
Not a painter per se, but his art speaks to me on more than one level.
-
Got to think about this one, rather than just Jumping in here! My trouble is that the greats are there, but do they really have any influence on what I Do?
I don't think so!
They inspire me to try harder and frustrate me with their skill. There are loads of artists that I have met at open studios etc. That are not famous who maybe have more influence. There are lots that I just like their work, many of which post regularly here.
Have to hold off on the famous ones for now though. -

Escher is on the verge of art and science.
-
Escher is great! I made one Escheresque front page illustration for my MSc thesis in Hydraulcs (what could illustrate hydraulics better than his "Waterfall"?).
Oddly enough, I didn't include Leonardo for his paintings, but rather his drawings. I can hardly imagine anyone arguing that he would perhaps be one of the most devoted users of Moleskine sketchbooks if they existed 500-odd years ago. Don't you think that his Codex is possibly a very first example of Skineart?! Leo, what is your thought of your namesake in this matter? -
