An Interview with Susan Rudat

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I live in Texas, in a small town just outside of Austin. I was born in Boston, but I’ve been in Texas since I was a teenager. I have worked as a multi-image graphic designer for more than 20 years. Before computers, my work was with 35mm film. The work was very technical and tedious, but you can’t compare the beauty of film over video projection. When computers hit the mainstream, most of my work was output to PowerPoint. The job was very stressful, always long hours, and always on the road. Being able to see the world made the work worthwhile.
What first made you want to become an artist?
I think being an artist was inevitable from a very early age. It’s just who I am, and hopefully always will be.
Please describe your creative process (how, when, materials, etc).
I equally love illustrating and painting. I work on illustrations and sketches really early in the morning, usually starting around 3:00 or 4:00am. Since I always feel too confined being indoors during the day, I mostly paint outside. A perfect day would be illustrations by lamplight in the mornings, and larger paintings outside during the daylight.
What are some of your current projects?
I have been a freelancer for about 10 years, so whatever project comes along…print design, sign painting, illustrations, web design, PowerPoint, you name it. I would love to have a large illustration project to dip my pens and brushes into. Through the years I’ve been involved with quite a few art shows, which are always fun.
What advice would you give to artists who are just starting out?
If you are passionate about your art, keep going, don’t stop! It’s great to see new artists’ work.
Who are your favorite artists on skineart.com?
I really like quite of few of the artists and many different posts on skineart.com.
What are your portfolio sites/blog?

Besides creating fantastic artwork, what are your other hobbies?
I love nature, and learning about how to protect our environment. I’m not exactly a tree hugger, but a great admirer of nature.

Your use of lines is always amazing to me. Not to mention your ability to convey a sense of motion and energy in the most inert seeming subjects.
