An Interview with Nacho Yague

Tell us a bit about yourself.

Hi, i’m Nacho Yagüe, i was born in Valencia. After a cursed fine arts career, and working as a website designer, i moved to Palma de Mallorca to work as a concept artist in a videogame company.
Since October 2007 i am living in Barcelona, working as a senior concept artist at GRIN Barcelona (http://www.grin.se) working on an still-unannounced videogame.

What made you decide to become an artist?

My sister. When i was a child, i was amazed watching her drawings. After that i became fond of comics (japanese and american) and european painters, i think that’s the reason I started drawing…
And cos i’m a very nervous, i needed to amuse myself with something :)

Please describe your creative process (how, when, materials, etc).

Basically i work in Traditional and digital media. For my personal projects, i love to sketch in my moleskine using fine point pens and markers. Usually i don’t draw a sketch with pencils. I sketch directly with a very soft gray marker.
After that i use darker gray markers to shade and create a general shape, and after that i draw with 0.02 and 0.05 black markers.
For digital work, i use photoshop CS3 and painter.
I don’t like to draw directly, so i start creating a general view of the illustration drawing shapes with big brushes and adding details later.

What are some of your current projects?

I’m currently working on a videogame based on a famous movie, but i can’t say anything more cos the project is still unannounced. If everything is ok, maybe this week our project will be announced to the videogame press.

What advice would you give to artists who are just starting out?

Practice, and have fun. Nothing more.
If you don’t enjoy drawing, you’ll never try to make an effort, if you love drawing, practice as much as you can. Try to be observer, and try to go one step beyond. Don’t be afraid of drawing

Tell us a bit about the subject matter in your sketches on skineart.

Well, i try to draw everything i want, have fun. I love monsters and funny creatures, and play with different shapes.
I really enjoy sketching different and abstract shapes, add a bit of shadow/light and draw details without think too much on what i want to create.
I have one moleskine that i use as a diary, drawing my life occurences and experiences, writing funny phrases told by my friends and deriding about little problems and bad experiences.
My moleskine is full of different topics, but normallly i use it for having fun drawing things that normally i can’t do in my job

Who are your favorite artists on skineart.com?

Mmmm. Lots!. But if i have to choose 5 of them,…
I really admire Mattias A (great immagination), HonoluluDogfight (Retro style rocks ), Alexander (one of my coworkers and a great artist.. and nice person :P ), stefkardos(really nice line work) and stefanomarvulli (great work with watercolors)

What are your portfolio sites/blog?

My blog

Besides creating fantastic artwork, what are your other hobbies?

Beer :P .. Joking apart, i love to walk around Barcelona with my fav music, go out for “tapas” with my friends, playing videogames (but i haven’t got too much time for playing), and visit a new country each 2 months :)
