An Interview with Julien Fassel aka Lapin
Tell us a bit about yourself.
My name is Julien Fassel, but most of my friends call me “lapin” means Rabbit in english. I’m a french illustrator based in barcelona for 1 year, and I work as a freelance in advertising, edition, fashion… I was working for 6 years in design agencies in paris and then barcelona, doing packaging and logotypes.
What first made you want to become an artist?
At first, to express myself, to get more time to think about my own project… and I feel so comfortable since I did that choice.
Please describe your creative process (how, when, materials, etc).
My process is really simple. I sketch all the time, and everywhere in smalls notebooks, directly with my ink pen, and sometime with watercolor. I began 6 years ago, in the subway of paris while I was going to work, to sketch people reading, or listening their i-pod.
And then I sketch more and more various things, landscape, portraits…
At the moment, I made 97 “calepins de lapin” (stands for my own notebooks) more few travels book.
What are some of your current projects?
I’m thinking of a “calepins” exhibition in barcelona, and also to publish some travel books.
Also with some friends, we publish a collective review and doing some exhibitions. Let’s have a look on http://www.palesite.com
A new one very soon.
What advice would you give to artists who are just starting out?
Sketch all the time and anything. You will find your sensibility by what you choose to sketch, and how you do it.
Who are your favorite artists on skineart.com?
I love the work of mattias, that I discover on his blog months ago, but also stefkardos work, elbragon, amiplasse or nachoyague… there is a good level in here. A real enjoyment to be part of…
What are your portfolio sites/blog?
Besides creating fantastic artwork, what are your other hobbies?
I love travelling with my girl, and also doing photography.
