An Interview with Marcelo Braga aka elbragon

We begin our Artist Spotlight series with Marcelo Braga. The Artist Spotlights will allow you to get to know your favorite artists better and learn about what inspires them to draw.

Tell us a bit about yourself (name, location, personal and work stuff).

My name is Marcelo Braga. I draw since someone put a pencil in my hand, maybe at 3. I live in Sao Paulo, Brazil and have a small illustration studio with some friends. It’s called Macacolandia. We work basically to advertising agencies.

What first made you want to become an artist?

I think it was the comic books and cartoons.

Please describe your creative process (how, when, materials, etc).

I work better in the morning and I don’t really have a process, just a will to draw. But I unfortunately don’t to that every day, I’m very lazy and I love to do other things too. Maybe that’s something like a process… I’ve always worked a lot with a pencil. When I grew up a little I discovered that you can use a pen, or even a brush! I started to paint after I discovered Photoshop, but now I’m having some watercolors lessons.

What are some of your current projects?

Besides the work here in the studio I’m trying to start a one shot comic book with my friend Stephen Lindsay, trying to finish the script of my own graphic novel, published in my blog until page 17 and start the illustrations on my girlfriend’s poetry book. If I get to finish… well, if I get to start and keep moving just one of these projects, I’ll be very happy!

What advice would you give to artists who are just starting out?

Maybe it’s the same advice everybody already knows, DRAW, DRAW and DRAW. Draw everything, everyone, copy other artists, make stuff of your own, imagine yourself like Normann Rockwell of maybe Mort Drucker and why not Al Hirschfeld? Everything is possible if you love to draw.

Who are your favorite artists on skineart.com?

I specially like the work of Mattias Adolfsson, Strych9ine, Susan Rudat, Gabriel Campanario and Iphigen.

What is your favorite post on skineart.com?

Well, that’s a though question… Anything from Mattias?

What are your porftolio sites/blog?

Besides creating fantastic artwork, what are your other hobbies?

I like – to kiss, hug, fight, love, sleep with, wake up with, laugh with- my girlfriend and the rest of my time to drink with friends, travel, ride my bike, watch movies, make movies, make prank calls, swim, read, take pictures and practice AIKIDO. By the way, I don’t smoke. I’ve been trying for two years and I just can’t… I feel like a Loser.
