I would be willing to moderate, but my feet won’t win the size contest. Is that okay?
April 7, 2009 at 7:10 pm #35719Ladies have more delicate feet, Susan, so the new rules state that their feet sizes should count double. How about “feet” for a topic?
April 7, 2009 at 8:42 pm #35720R_sail heres one I found earlier
http://www.smashingmagazine.co.uk. then use the search box.
I am all for Susan and her small feet!
Feet possibly as a first theme?
April 7, 2009 at 9:19 pm #35721@nick that’s cool.
No feet. Feet will never be a theme if I have anything to say about it.
April 9, 2009 at 9:19 pm #35724Your reply made me chuckle. The horror FEET!
Maybe your right!
April 10, 2009 at 6:14 pm #35725Feet seem to be topical… at least it/they would get us started if it/they was/were the first “theme”… http://www.urbansketchers.com/2009/04/john-reading.html
April 10, 2009 at 7:37 pm #35726There will be no feet.
April 11, 2009 at 11:49 am #35727OK… no feet! But at least I would like to dip a toe in the cool water… and yes, I know dipping one’s toe in water is cool… but the water here is possibly too cool so no-one’s shedding their socks or sandals…
I almost jumped in with the following a couple of weeks ago… but, being a full-time carer for my wife, I don’t have the free time to moderate a group; nor do I have the mental energy nowadays to brainstorm a long list of challenging themes.
However, I see the initial excitement here for a challenge ebbing away (sorry, another watery pun)… and as r_sail aptly put it… there needs to be more than three people up for it! (or words to that effect <g>).
Here’s how I see it – from my perspective of having been an editor and publisher of specialist photo magazines in the UK during the ’90s – and previously as an entrant to dozens of national photo competitions through the ’60s and ‘70s when I was banned (for winning too many) and put on judging panels to keep me happy… which really opened my eyes wide to general artistic quality and image content (or the lack of it).
A challenge needs two things… a theme (at least the consensus of opinion seems to be that “feet” should go take a walk!) but also, and more importantly, a time-frame. The one question I was continually asked when organizing photo competitions was, “When’s the closing date? How long have we got?” The sponsors – some were putting up thousands of dollars of prizes with linked advertising – as well as the entrant-hopefuls, all wanted a deadline to end their anticipation or agony more than they needed an idea to kick-start their quest for glory.
BTW : I have both won, and judged, competitions where there was only one entrant!
So where are we?
April 11, 2009 at 12:59 pm #35728Good on you Ed,We need to get this thing rolling now.
Give us a theme off your list R-sail.
Lets give those who have contributed to the debate so far 2weeks from the date R-Sail gives us the theme to come up with something and get the ball rolling, were losing impetus.Anyone up for it.
Where would we post the details of the theme so that others know about it?
We need to get Leo to post some kind of details or advert on the front page so that once we get going others can see whats happening and join in.
Again is there any way that we can contact Leo rather than him just popping in to read this on the off chance?
I make it a possible 6 willing to give it a go so far.Not many but its a start.
Once up and running then maybe a prize thing could come into it to encourage participants, voted on by the entrants? but lets see how it goes first, personally the accolade of winning would be enough [ not much danger of that considering the quality of the work that the other 5 have submitted generally!!!} Its for fun and a bit of inspiration.
April 11, 2009 at 8:29 pm #35729Sorry, I’ve been really busy and fudging about with the list when I find the time. I’ve got a list of 40, which is one theme per double page spread of a standard Moleskine sketchbook. But… I’m not entirely happy with each theme, so I’ve been playing with it.
I think six or seven people is enough to get it going. People can join as and when they see fit.
Two weeks sounds like a good time frame.
As for an advert, just mention that it’s a “theme challenge” we’re doing via the forums in your description. Keep it short and people will read it. I’ll start a thread specific to the themes later, and we can all link to it in the description for the first few entries to encourage more people checking it out.
Also, be sure to add tags to your entry. “Theme” and the word that is the actual specific theme of that challenge such as “feet”

We can figure out better or other tags before the first challenge is posted, but… sound good?
April 13, 2009 at 11:02 am #35730Go with it man!!
April 14, 2009 at 1:34 am #35731so is the theme feet?
April 14, 2009 at 1:44 am #35732i dont know how much i could say/draw about feet but im fine with it!. lets get this started!
April 14, 2009 at 4:38 am #35733I’m in, feet or no feet.
April 14, 2009 at 5:22 am #35734Yeh… I’ll jump in with two… or at least hop in with one! 8~/
April 14, 2009 at 10:43 am #35735Count me in too. Ps Sorry – it was me who mentioned the “feet” word initially but didn’t mean it to be construed as a topic. Margie has a lovely post (13th April) quoting from Dante. How about something from another famous quote from the past? unless someone has a better idea – which they surely must.
April 14, 2009 at 6:39 pm #35736Hey guys, I’m neck deep in the middle of a project, so… sadly, for the next couple days work is taking priority. I’ll get this going by the weekend. Promise.
P.S.: NO FEET!!!
April 14, 2009 at 7:52 pm #35737OK No feet!!!
Nice to see some other people along for the ride welcome one and all!!!
April 15, 2009 at 7:38 pm #35738I hate to say it r_sail but I think its too late Susan has gone with the theme feet!!!
I think were gonna have to run with it this time round. At least its started it off what does every one think?
It would take the pressure off you r_sail, until you’re ready to let us have one of your Themes and it might get a bit of momentum up for the real thing in say a week or so.I know your not keen on the theme but what the hell its not the end of the world is it?
So we need to tag Theme/then the actual theme name/plus our own stuff
April 15, 2009 at 10:55 pm #35739Just thought I’d give it a try;) All we need is one word to get started. No harm done, huh?
