2010Apr 20tags: Hobbiton | Matamata | New Zealand | pencil | river | rock | waterfallsome river stones I sketched in my sketchbook one day when on holiday up north in the Waikato. This is near Matamata, where they built the “Hobbiton” set for Lord of the Rings. There’s a waterfall there, and a very steep hike up a mountain to the top of it. The walk runs along this little river before it climbs up the gorge.

2010Jan 29tags: Almondell Park | waterfallTiny turbulence – Acrylic in a Watercolour Moleskine
Spring cannot be far away. Everywhere you go the snow is melting and the run-off seeks lower parts. This is a scene, in Almondell Park; this morning, where literally hundreds of small, muddy streams are flowing down towards the River Almond. The painting tries to show a really tiny waterfall surrounded by an emerging riot of crocuses and snowdrops. Its as if they have been waiting for an excuse to show off. The distance, incidentally, across the page represents around 3 feet. Maybe I should look down at my feet more often.

2010Jan 15tags: earth | glacier | lyrics | map | ocean | salt | stars | watercolor | waterfall | worldThis is based on the lyrics of a song (which are written on the glacier) by Death Cab for Cutie. Every time I hear this song I have this picture in my mind and it was great to finally draw it. I had a great time painting/drawing this one and I love how it turned out. Sorry if your country is horribly deformed, I wanted the continents to be recognizable without spending an eternity worrying about detail. The stars were made by sprinkling a bit of salt on the black watercolor while still wet.
In case you can’t read my writing here are the lyrics:
“I wish the world was flat like the old days, so I could travel just by folding a map… there’d be no distance that could hold us back.” -
2009Jun 8tags: Feather River Canyon | watercolor | waterfall | WC MoleskineThis is a waterfall in the Feather River Canyon, and there is a railroad track that goes right over it. See the tiny human figure on one of the rocks? That will give you some idea of how large those boulders are.

Above the waterfall near Tynron. Its just been raining the salmon were jumping the waterfall! I’ve never seen salmon jump before so it was great seeing them for the first time.
