Rest and be thankful – Watercolour

The name is inscribed on a boulder near the summit of this road in Argyll at the head of Glen Croe. This photograph shows the old drovers road with the new road above it.

The name has been borrowed and used in many parts of the country and Edinburgh is no exception. Edinburgh’s “Rest and be Thankful” is the local name for a spot on the Ravelston Area on the east side of Corstorphine Hill. The scene shows the view, over Murrayfield Golf Course looking towards the city away in the distance. This was a favourite spot of my parents when they were courting during WW2. The view has hardly changed according to an old sketch by Gordon Hume whose version, “Edinburgh from Murrayfield Golf Course” looks exactly the same as this. Dad liked this area so much he requested his ashes be scattered here after his death.
