This was a really nice find for me. A beautiful old set of Chinese doors with hand-carved designs at the top is hiding an unusable back entrance to a popular Asian restaurant in Chinatown, Honolulu.

2009Jul 12tags: Honolulu | Sans Souci Beach | Sketchcrawl #23Today I participated in Sketchcrawl #23. My first sketch was done at my own beach. The police arrived to warn people about dogs causing problems on the beach. Water was calm and clear and gorgeous!

2009Mar 17tags: Honolulu | kindergarten | Waikiki Aquarium | watercolor and ink penThe Waikiki Aquarium is close to where I live. Today we finally had tropical weather again after a long period of ugliness and I felt like going out for a sketch. This was part of a larger group of kindergateners who had come to a grassy area beside the Aquarium with chaperones to enjoy lunch in the part after visiting the Aquarium.

2009Feb 22tags: Academy Art Center | Honolulu | ink and watercolorThe Academy Art Center is part of the Honolulu Academy of Arts and I have taken many different types of art classes here. It is a beautiful piece of architecture and the front steps are actually semicircular. However mine didn’t come out that way!
I believe it is built with blocks of coral, like many of our other older buildings.

2009Jan 23tags: Coconut Ave. | Egyptian | Honolulu | horse | muralI stumbled upon this mural on the wall of a home while poking around my neighborhood. It was very colorful in hot pinks and other tropical colors, but I decided to stick with black and white. The designs around it are my own creations.

2008Dec 30tags: Honolulu | Robert Lewis Stevenson | Tusitala | Waikiki | www.lindabachrach.comThese funky homes and cottages of old Honolulu are nearly gone and I like to draw some of my all-time favorites. In spite of how presentable my sketch made it look, this place has a charm all its own, with whirygigs and other paraphernalia cluttering up the place, but giving the house a wonderful character. I was delighted to find it still standing when I came to sketch it this morning. The street name “Tusitala” means “story teller” in Samoan. Robert Lewis Stevenson adopted this as his local name when he spent time here in Honolulu.

2008Dec 24tags: Ala Wai Canal | birds | Honolulu | lindabachrach.comI met these birds along the Ala Wai Canal this morning. One strange looking bird was fishing as was one of the white ones. The other is a pigeon. We have mostly white pigeons here in Hawaii….not sure why.
