Van de Velde revisited – Inktense with graphite powder
I’m still trying to learn new tricks and techniques. This effort uses graphite powder which was used to “load” the area to the left of the ship then some was removed with a putty eraser to give highlights. I made my own graphite powder by keeping the residue left after sharpening pencils on sandpaper. I’m very careful not to sneeze when tipping this into a small container. I applied the powder with an old brush and carefully added tones with a soft tissue.
This is a copy of one of my all time favourite paintings. Its the “Cannon shot” by Willem van de Velde the Younger. It hangs in the Riksmuseum in Amsterdam and I have had the pleasure of seeing it there. It is larger than I imagined being about 80cm x 86 cm.
