I did this at the north rim of the Grand Canyon. It is done in watercolor alla prima. Drying times between layers was not an issue in 108 F heat. Thankfully, I was sitting in the shade of an accommodating juniper tree. Pure bliss.

2011Aug 21tags: ala prima | Grand Canyon | North Rim | watercolorThis is the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. I did it on location alla prima. Drying time was not an issue in 108 F degree heat. Land management controlled forest fires clouded up the canyon past acceptable for photos to be taken, so I thought I’d try this.

2011Jan 1tags: colorado river | Colored markers | Grand Canyon | plateau point | white inkOK! (finally) My first download is, of course, the Grand Canyon. I did this from memory as I have been there many times. I was using a white ink pen for the first time but without much satisfaction. The dark gash is Bright Angel canyon, location of the well known Phantom Ranch lodge. Plateau Point sits directly beneath it and offers a breathtaking view of the Colorado River (seen as the green strip). I may have used some artistic license showing the river at the point from which this sketch was remembered, but I think it works anyway. It is done with black felt tip pen and color markers. I even wrote some notations which I normally do not.
