Another ice-crystal inspired page that took shape a few nights ago.

Hummingbird

My attempt at a hummingbird inspired by the style of Pacific Northwest native art.

Curling Stones

The winter Olympics being on tv means I actually get to watch my favorite sport, curling (also called the roaring game for the sound the stones make sliding down the ice) which we have to thank the Scots for inventing. The curling club in Pittsburgh is holding an open house next week and I plan on being there seeing how it goes.

Full Crystal

I couldn’t resist a little digital manipulation in order to complete the water crystal/snowflake pattern posted yesterday. With the whole thing put together, I can almost see it dancing in a soft winter wind, drifting toward a branch or blade of grass, waiting to catch it.

Crystal II

This one popped up from one of the stages of the a snowflake I was drawing. I wanted to try a pattern that didn’t quite survive in the snowflake. This was the result, although I wish I’d paid a little more attention to where I started it on the page so there was a complete pattern.

Building a Snowflake

This one started with a circle, and then some guidelines drawn in every sixty degrees so I could get a hexagon and build on that shape. Then I just thought about what forms lines and shapes seemed interesting and marked those with color. Then I erased the guidelines and started filling the interior. Some of the original shapes got broken down into smaller pieces to make them more interesting , and then, finally, the background was shaded in to finish it off.

Snowflake

Another geometric design based loosely on images of water crystals. I’m also posting a collage of the stages of this one because it changed so much from beginning to end and I find the process itself just as interesting as the final image.

Crystallization

Bob sent me a link to images of snow crystals (http://www.hot.ee/her/lumi.html) the other day and I ended up trying to do something from memory that evening based on the six-sided symmetry of those crystals. Here are three steps of the picture from the rough lines and first ink, to the final colors.
