By day I am a children's book illustrator, with around 30 published titles, but whenever I get the opportunity, I sneak off with a sketchbook to play. My published book illustrations are drawn mainly from my imagination and always in pastels, so to keep my personal sketchbook work totally my own, I work very differently, always drawing from observation, using mainly pencil, pen or watercolour. Done during the Urban Sketchers Syposium, as part of a workshop called ‘Lining Over Colour’ – putting down colour first, in simple lines only, then working over afterwards in line.

I was introduced to this view, looking out across the Tagus River, during the Urban Sketchers 2011 Symposium last weekend. I tried an experiment, using just watercolour, and straight down onto the page, without any pencil guidelines. I didn’t manage to capture the heat of the sun, but I was pleased with the simplification.
