Buddies for Life
After driving by this pasture with cows all out in it munching to there hearts content I noticed some calves soaking up some sun. They were hunkered down while I drove by. I decided I would sketch them this time. They had evaded me once before after making a u turn to come back but this time I came to a slow stop. They were definitely aware of me and the first one to get up was the one on the right. He was facing away from me at the time and stood up just as you seem him here. His buddy was laying down facing me. I was able to sketch the calf on the right as he stood. As I finished, the one on the left had stood up and walked over to his buddy as you see him here. You should have seen there ears twitching and turning just wondering what to do. A perfect match. Buddies for life!

Out and about one day, and I drove by this colorful rice field so I had to stop and sketch it. This was done not to far from Alvin, TX home of Nolan Ryan the famous Astros/Ranger Major League Baseball Pitcher. You can even get a pound of chuck at the local grocery store from his ranch. Ive never tried it though.

I love the way you can use charcoal to draw. It can give you a very strong contrast and make your whites bright. I was remembering when I first started using vine charcoal and I made a sketch of some dancers from a photograph. Here is what I’m talking about. http://kirbysart.blogspot.com/2009/06/off-wall-cabo-verde.html
I used the same expressive stokes in this painting and it turned out really good. This scene was taking from my recent kayaking trip to Galveston, TX. This is at the foot of the Galveston Causeway on the island. The name of the shrimp boat is Dorothy L. I think its the bait shops own shrimp boat.

This is an old water tower. I’m not sure how old but by the looks of it I think its pretty old. I did this on a sketching trip to Clear Lake near Galveston Bay.
