I am not sure about adding a background, but I would add a shadow underneath it to give it a context, to ground it and give it weight. I kinda like no background.
I like how well it is contoured in the grooves and bumps: good line work!
Horizontal lines made as close to each other as possible from the top working downwards. As each line is drawn, continue down the sheet with an increase in the blank paper width between them ever so gradually. The final lines should be no more than a quarter of an inch apart. Do the exact opposite for the cast shadow beneath skull. A purple ink will work best. The incisors could be made orange for both accuracy and WOW!! factor. This will pop out and bite someone then!!!!
