This is a view from the top of Beckwourth pass at 5,000 feet into the beginnings of the Great Basin Desert. The trees become sparse here and most of the plant life is either sagebrush or rabbit brush. By the time one gets to Reno it’s almost all rocks and sand. Reno is at about 4,000 feet, and is considered “high desert” whereas most of the Mojave is “low desert” because of the much lower elevations, including some parts that are below sea level.

It is a gigantic enormous landscape here, and I love every nook and cranny of it. But both of your landscapes are just as dreamy. I think the big difference is only in the numbers of people one has to contend with. The U.S.A. is HUGE, and once one gets out of the city there are places, like this, where one can have a highway almost all to oneself, or sit by the shores of a lake with no one else there, and it feels like it belongs to just you alone. Since I’m sort of a hermit by nature, I ADORE that part of living here. So much of it is still wild and unspoiled, although as the population grows some of my favorite spots are no more and I have to continually find new ones.
