Sunset in Mala Duba. The very same scene as the one posted on September 3rd, buit done by Dervent Studio colour pencils on a large sketch book.
I have to add that I wasn’t happy how this particular notebook accepts watercolours, and I’m not happy with how it deals with colour pencils either. What is it for? Guache/Tempera, Ink, Pencil? Help me, I’m getting confused, and planning to give it up…

I think, ink, pen, brush, some people used tempera, guashe, pencil, watercolor accents pretty successfully. Needs light touch. But for brighter color and more water i would say watercolor Molly. I myself sometimes abused the paper in Molly Sketch with water. You achieved beautiful effect here.

For working with watercolor I only use Watercolor Moleskines. The sketch Molys just don’t do well with watercolor or watercolor pencils and the sketch Moly I tried did not accept colored pencil very well either as the paper had no “tooth” and was too smooth, so now I confine that one to using only ink, and it handles ink very well.

I used pen, graphite and colored pencil(needs fixing it can transfer. I heard Gauche works well, but I haven’t tried it. Watercolor with almost dry washes will work but not that good I wouldn’t bother. Otherwise if you really like the format of these moleskins 5.5″ high by 3.5″ wide you could rebind it with watercolor paper like I did here

Oh I forgot, you can use Faber Castell brush tip pens. They work well, have india ink in them, and come in a bunch of different colors.

Kirby, its very interesting to do it yourself, but time consuming. Back in russia i use to mix and mach my own paper in sketchbooks, because they didn’t have big variety then, but I ordered it in publishing places. What about watercolor Molly? Two kinds of Watercolor Molly in 2 sizes each. i think it holds water well.

Ink and Inktense pencils work great on these sketchbooks. Do do Prismacolor pencils (I love using Prismacolors on top of Inktense washesfor really saturated color. Don’t give up on them!

Thanks everyone. I’ll reconsider and probably not give it up. How abaout pastels (soft or oil)? They might work here, I guess…

BTW, In this cosmic asshole where I live, it’s not that simple to get artist’s materials. Inktense you say? Yes, perhaps next summer when I hit the road. Even Molies I Have to buy in Zagreb, Vienna or Prague.
Fortunatelly I have stored reserves of Rembrandt watercolours, and oli paints, then Dervent Studio an Pastel sets of 72 (each), and loads and loads of fine brushes, which I’m hesitant to use, keeping them for the old days (which, probably had come – the fact that I’m ignoring). I love artist’s materials per se. Like to take them out of the shelves and rearange them. Aren’t they beautiful?
Question: do any of you know who still produces ready made Casein or Egg Temperas? I could not find them on the sites of major art material suppliers! Did enyone tried “H2Oil” paints?
