Café Saigon
11″ x 3.5″ Watercolor and pen on Rebound Moleskine

While eating at a local restaurant called Café Saigon, I was looking for something to sketch. There was a guy at the front counter but he looked kind of creepy. Since it was around 2PM a late lunch there wasn’t any other customers. So I looked for some still life subjects. In the corner near the front window, light was lighting up this palm plant that sky rocketed upwards. It must have been 11 feet tall. It was ideal for a vertical landscape format. So I started to sketch it in, after I finished eating of course. I didn’t have a lot of time so I quickly drew some outlines. The pot was done first and then some branches and some quick studies of different positions of the leaves then I had to go. I made a mental note of some of the colors I saw and later that day when I had time I started putting in all the leaves. Then some background washes. Finally I laid in the palm leaves and finished the pot. By the way if your wanting to know what I was eating I always get the Bun Cha Gio Cuon(Vermicelli Noodle Salad with Egg Rolls). I add the fish sauce and the garlic hot sauce, lol. Very good!
