Idle Train
3.5″ x 11″ Watercolor and pen, on rebound Moleskine

I was on my way to get some groceries yesterday and had some time to do a sketch. I was going to do another viewpoint of the train depot but I accidentally passed it by. I must have been daydreaming again. Anyway after making the block around to get a better view of the depot I noticed this big open area across the street with this train sitting there at idle. Well you know where this is going by now. So I drove over there and parked the car and commenced to sketching.

I wasn’t sure if I was going to have time to do the whole sketch so first thing I did was take a photo of it. I omitted a lot of other objects in view and focused on getting just the train. With that done, I quickly blocked the train in to get the perspective right and started filling in details and added the telephone poles in the background. All the time I was doing this the train would idle up and down which scared the crap out of me. I was afraid I wouldn’t be able to get the sketch completed. You might be able to see quick sketch marks where I franticly sketched in parts and looked up to see if it was moving. Well after doing the under-drawing I started the watercolors and by that time I was used to the engine making loud noises, and an occasional very loud horn. Luckily I finished it with pleasing results. It was very hot that day and bright sunshine was on the train.
