Hanging Basket – Acrylic Ink with some Watercolour in a Watercolour Moleskine
As far as growing things is concerned I have always taken the line that, “If you can’t eat it – don’t grow it”. I have grown vegetables for many years, this year is no exception with potatoes, carrots, greens, onions, lettuce and garlic. I grow enough garlic to be self-sufficient in it, the crop lasts from year to year supplying my family and my only two friends.
Margaret has, from necessity, taken the task of flower arranging to heart and every year hangs these triffids around the house. This one is at our front door. Although I’m quite ambivalent about flowers, these plant collections are great (my scene does not do them justice). When they begin to bloom they fill up with bees and wasps which deter unwanted salesmen. Also works for canvassing politicians and members of the clergy.

Bob, you have to remember that flowers are food for the soul. So it’s a good thing Margaret is feeding your soul while you see to dinner.

Besides, it looks like she has some nasturtiums in the basket, and they are great in salads, both the flowers and the leaves. And then you get the bees and wasps too. What more could a man ask for?

Thanks for the idea, Rose. I’m going to try a hanging basket salad today. No! On second thoughts, I wouldn’t dare. These displays are, actually, an essential part of our summer which wouldn’t be the same without the colour. When the time comes to remove them everything suddenly looks bare and winter looms although Margaret has experimented with some winter plants in the past but the storms knock the things to pieces.

In the winter you could hang a garlic bouquet on the front door to keep away the riff raff. This is a wonderful little illustration. The colors are fabulous.

Great suggestion, Susan but I need the garlic to cook the visitors in. Its not that I don’t like folks such as clergymen. I like them fine but I couldn’t eat a whole one at once. Thanks for you comments
