My garden – Pencil with ink highlights in a plain Moleskine Sketchbook
We have had some unusually hot weather here in Scotland and this has made sleeping difficult. On Friday, I gave up trying and went and sat in the garden with a wee sketchbook and doodled away. This effort was started at 5.40am and finished about an hour later. Perhaps I’ll post the other ones later.

I’m curious what temperature you consider “unusually hot”. This is a peaceful, harmonious drawing. Very nice.

I’m talking about highs of 25C. I know you folks in Texas can easily top that but this is very unusual for us. The record, in Scotland, is 33C in the Scottish Borders but this WAS RARE. Our lowest, by comparison is -27C in the Highlands. We just are not prepared for extreme shifts and these always take us by surprise. I could not cope with your highs of over 40C. Thanks for the comment – much appreciated.

Honestly, Joe – a “Doodle”. I tend to sit and scribble things over and over again. Sometimes I can spend a day on a wee sketch although this one was much quicker. Thanks for your nice feedback. PS Loving your latest series on smiling faces – only sunburnt faces here, I’m afraid!

This is nicely balanced and also there are different shapes and textures. The clumps of leaves and then the thinnish tree trunks going the other directiom. Really good.

hoping that you will be posting the others, as you mentioned “perhaps”.
the sketch as a wonderful feeling to it, esp. when coupled with comments about early morning.
do you have an email address ? I have further comments – as such, too much to post here.

I should say that someone told me that I sound like I know what I’m talking about. I certainly don’t. I don’t care (this isn’t self-depricating): I am not an art instructor. But if I see something working well for you I’m inclined to say so. When you VARY things I guess that’s what’s good a lot of times. Some things closer and then farther away. Different shapes. You have a good sense of balance and texture, this I noticed also with the linseed oil factory–you somehow managed to make it not so flat and 2D which by rights it would have been.

R.G. Thanks for this. Its not really necessary to trouble yourself with further comments but, if you want, you can reach me at

Your kind response to my post is much appreciated.
Sophie. I always appreciate the time you take to comment on my posts. I suspect you and I are somewhat alike. When I look at something I know if I like it or not without too much analysis. I know that your comments will always be fair but direct and I am grateful for them. I never really try to add balance, form etc. I find that somethings just work while others don’t. I seem to be lucky that folks, such as yourself, like my humble efforts.

Well this is all kind of fun, right? I’m going to have to soon get a printer with probably a scanner on there as well, I don’t know if this involves scanning or digital photos but I should have this all soon enough (I’m moving to another apartment soon so I’m not pressuring myself). I might start a blog. I can afford this becuause I stopped smoking. So building up my computer equipment a little is the next step, though I’m saving for a digital piano at least by Christmas. But I am drawing a lot, I’ll have to have something to post.
