Dried winter Muhly grass. I sketched this just before cutting them back for their new spring growth.
This is a nice drawing of a lovely grass. I started growing different varieties of grass a few years ago but my “grass bed” has degenerated into just a few varieties. The link http://www.flickr.com/photos/28475994@N00/3248005075/
shows my main “pampas grass” with some sedges nearby – taken this morning. This “Cortaderia selloana” needs the same annual treatment as your Muhly – severe hacking back. Someone has even suggested I burn the stuff back to the ground – after the snow goes that is.
Your garden is very impressive! Don’t forget to wear your work gloves when dealing with these grasses. The blades are very sharp and hurt like paper cuts. Also the bees nest in these. It’s no fun to have a bee stung paper cut.
