to me, it is because of the intimate relationship we have with such tools/machines. we hold them (irons, utensils like forks and knives), we sit on/in them (cars, chairs), and stick our feet in them (shoes, bathtubs). moreover, many were designed with features that we tend to recognize as a human face (wall outlets, the front ends of cars, etc.) intentionally or not, humans place themselves in the things that they design and use.
