Trees in a grass verge – Watercolour in a watercolour Moleskine. These old trees (there are many more than this sketch shows) are probably all that is left of an old hedgerow they being allowed to reach maturity. What nature couldn’t destroy, it seems that we can. A new road is planned for this very spot and soon these trees might be gone – unless the current economic climate means the building work will be stopped.

This is good because the foreground trees stand out more and the texture of the grass.
I wonder if they’ve thought of moving the trees. Or they could say, “Listen, we’re ripping this all out over here, so come and get it.” Of course they could be awfully big, you didn’t say.
Happy New Year! About my digital pictures, don’t ask.

This is wonderful. I love the more faded colors at the top of the large tree, a misty impression.
Our small town single-handedly stopped a large road from coming through the countryside, old trees were part of the arguement. The community voted against the road…for now anyway. I hate seeing this sort of useless destruction.

Thanks for the comments folks. I don’t think the trees could be moved as they are about 35/40 feet tall. There are around 20 of them in a line along a small road which needs to “be improved”. The centre of Edinburgh is a mess at the moment as a new tramway system means the streets, including the main Prince’s St, are being dug up causing hardship for local traders and tourists. This progress is finding its way out to the outskirts where we stay, about ten miles away and new infrastructures are “needed”. Its good, Susan, that “people power” worked for your area. I wish that more folks here were interested but this accursed tram network has dominated our area for a couple of years now and many are now just wishing the thing would get finished to allow some peace to return. Oh dear! I’m ranting again. I painted the trees and added the comments after a walk on Hogmanay -a time when I was in my philosophical mode as the old year drew to its conclusion. Must be more positive now that 2009 is here. Looking at all of the M’Skinners’ posts will help.
Sophie! What about your di ……… sorry! Didn’t really ask – only a wee bit.

I loove the way you watercolor, especially the grass, it looks so nice.
And as everything else changes, you can always count on people to destroy.

I read somewhere that trees do everything people do but talk. This also is a departure because most of your trees are more distant (that I can recall here)…The best of my pictures are like, the worst photos I’ve ever seen. Not clear like other peoples pictures. When I click it seems to take a few seconds. So the cat has already left the frame. Maybe I’d be better off with a scanner…I actually wanted to SEND you a watercolor just so that you could see it.
Last night I was up all night and did a big oil pastel, of course not in a notebook. But at least I’m doing SOME artwork, so that’s something. I’ve tried to stay up all day so that my sleep cycle won’t be off and I’m really tired.

Thank you, quickdrawl, for the nice comments. Most folks by now will have realised that I’m daft about trees, hence the “posting”.
Sophie! Trees DO talk in a funny sort of way. The ancient Greeks used to describe them speaking in the “Aeolian Wind”. I wonder what the trees said to them? Good to hear that you are doing some artwork. Just take things easily so that you enjoy what you are doing. I’m flattered that you wanted to send me one of your watercolours but, what would really be great, would be to see it on Skineart. You seem to be having atrocious luck in getting the things onto this site. If you want, why not describe EXACTLY what you have tried to do and what the glitches seem to be? Send me a list. I’m supposed to know something about computers (Before retirement I was in charge of a Technology Department in a High School) so I might be able to help. If I cannot, then one of my three sons should be able to. They all have BSC Hons in Computer Science and work in related industries. I sent you a message so you should now have an email address to reply to me. Whatever you do, don’t get discouraged about your pictures. Lots of folk have said before that people on Skineart don’t judge folks’ work. I believe they, as I do, enjoy looking at all of the different styles, subject matter, whatever, and that is reward in itself. If I thought that MY stuff was unworthy then I would have very few things registered here. I consider myself just an average guy who likes drawing and painting. Good luck with the art and enjoy!!!!

I’ll write you–I’m looking. I clicked the “notify me” box. Part of this is probably my lack of patience. I did a watercolor of the Garden of the Gods near where I grew up. Purple mountains majesty, red rocks, etc. Of course I’m not a tree person and the bushes are just green dots but it worked out pretty well. So the pictures were blurry and the light in the living room is not so great either. I had mixed results with the cat, the walls looked cream colored but are not in real life. I either have to keep tinkering (and honestly I just get ready to pull out my hair long before anyone else would give up. It’s a simple camera. It was only $20 but I think probably adequate. I’m the type who would rather go walking around the countryside. My telephone has 20 functions and I only use the one. I just want to pick up my phone and dial out without hassle, it’s the same here. I should try the light in the hallway of my building and maybe the light over the stove. I’m not embarassed about posting at all. But if the pictures are BLURRY. Then by the time I think about reading the instructions to post blurry pictures on the internet (I’ve never posted a photo on the internet–I have to upgrade my skills in a hurry because this is ridiculous).
I did not know that Annie Lennox was Scottish. She’s so cool. I hadn’t really known anything about Scotland. It’s like if your friend buys a car and suddenly you see that car everywhere.
