Fantastic! I wish I could study these up close! Your work is delightful (I looked through your blog, too). Happy New Year to you, too.

Thank you Margie.:)

Can’t really see why this is such a popular piece!

Still can’t really see why this is such a popular piece!

Looking through the other works on this site, I cannot see why this is such a popular piece. It has now risen to the top of the favorite ‘skines list! Am I missing something? I can see that it is probably a fairly good drawing but it seems to be an opaque and confused jumble to me. Perhaps someone can shed light on it for me?

Now I like this, you can see decisions being made between the draft on the left and the more thought out piece on the right. Adjustments in where things are placed and the final decisions on the background. Can you see how he has darkened the bottom to bring out the details on the figure and then left the background lighter around the head to draw your eye? The draft reminds me of Ralph Steadmans use of line. These are little books for ideas at the end of the day, just enjoy the ones you enjoy.

I’m not disputing the fact that it is a good drawing. I’m not saying that I don’t like it. What surprises me is that it is judged to be the favourite drawing on the whole site! There must be at least 100 pieces on the site that I would rank above this one. Perhaps it is time to do more ranking!
BoboMonkey 7:51 am on January 9, 2009 | #
Rank away, it is the right thing to do.

I think that one of the things so captivating about this one is that, like Mattias’ work (which was raked the highest for many many months) it is just SO imaginative. The fact that it is well-executed and we can see a progression of decisions, as BoboMonkey pointed out, makes it even higher.
I am enchanted most by the imagination involved. I want to climb into that drawing and see what makes it tick.

I also think this is wonderful, but it takes some serious squinting to see it. Personally, I absolutely love to see the technique used in art…the lines, dots, brush strokes, and so on. This is like trying to judge a dog show from the top seat of the arena. Could we see a larger image?
portnoy 9:10 am on January 9, 2009 | #
The indistinct image makes it even more surprising that it has been ranked so highly. Perhaps a higher resolution would bring out the quality that has eluded me, but not so many others.

It is good to hear from a few of the forty-seven people who have presumably ranked this piece. It is informative to hear what other people see in things that others wouldn’t give a second glance. I, for one, have given this piece many more glances than I would have done otherwise.

This looks like a very large number of votes in a very short time. Perhaps using proxy server?
portnoy 12:19 pm on January 9, 2009 | #
Must be a record number of votes in only eight or nine days. Others have taken many weeks or even months to get onto the favorite ‘skines list.
BoboMonkey 2:13 pm on January 9, 2009 | #
You suspect, interesting…should we do a role call of voters? Found guilty we break his pencils, cut the buttons from his smock, and drum him off the site. Hmmm….

Wow! I didn’t expect this drawing could elicit so much talk. So I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has given me their “hearts” and for portnoy for making this perhaps the most talked about submission in this site. 3 consecutive comments and more than 2 glances, that means a lot to me.
I will only say this once, I will not check any future responses to this because seriously I think it’s just a waste of my time. IMO, we should be more careful in giving out comments. No one is disputing about the submission’s quality, fine. But I hope we don’t dispute the right of the voters. When a person doesn’t see what others do, it doesn’t give him the right to question or worse summon those parties to defend their decision. But thanks to BoboMonkey and Margie for giving out their thoughts on this.
And for the record, if anyone’s trying to ask me if I have something to do with this “popularity contest”… the answer is NO. I have more important matters to attend to than trying to figure out where it is on this pages and what the term proxy server means.
Again, Happy New Year and thanks for your precious time everyone.:)

Well that seems definitive. Now I am faving all the pieces I like accross the whole 211 pages on the site to date. There is a wonderful range of drawing and some great quality to be seen.
