Common Haggis. Ink on a watercolour Moleskine.
This is a drawing of the common haggis. These shy wee creatures are very rarely seen as they have almost been hunted to extinction. The recent cold weather, however, has meant that they are venturing further afield in search for food. They became popular when Robert Burns wrote a famous address to a “Pudding” made from boiled haggis and many fear, as the 250th anniversary of the poet’s birth approaches, on January 25th 2009, that the beasties will be further decimated. To this end, a vegetarian variation is being promoted but “traditionalists” claim that it doesn’t taste the same. Haggis’ are being driven from their natural habitat and many sightings have been made outside Scotland even as far away as parts of the USA where surreptitious agencies seem to have introduced breeding pairs to that country. One National newspaper has even gone so far as to offer prizes for authenticated sightings ( http://haggishunt.scotsman.com/)

The subtle foggy colors are very nice. The haggis looks sort of like a badger. I’ve heard stories about the terrible taste of this “pudding”.

If you think haggis tastes terrible (it doesn’t really) then I am assured that “Guga” from the western Isles is far worse. It is, basically, boiled seabirds and was a source of fresh meat in days gone by. Even now, traditionalists claim to like the stuff but not all. This is from a website describing guga -
“Guga is without doubt the most disgusting thing,” said John MacGregor, a former Lewis resident. “It’s like strong duck stewed in cod liver oil and salt. The taste is bad enough – but my God, the smell as it’s boiled. It smells awful, truly really, really bad, like the worst thing you have ever smelt times 100,000.”
I think Mhuire has sussed out the joke about haggis but I’m not too sure about Susan unless you are “having me on” – in reverse, Susan? Haggis is, of course, a manufactured dish. I hope everyone enjoys their Christmas dinner after reading all of this.

I love the colors! Beautiful… just enough color for effect.
