A Scottish Heritage Tree – Watercolour

This ash tree stands in the grounds of Gordon Castle near Elgin, Moray. The tree is reputedly around 245 years old, is 95 feet high and measures approximately 26 feet around the base. Like many old trees the heartwood has long vanished leaving the centre of the bole hollow. All that supports this specimen is the outer layer of sapwood acting in the same way as a tube.
