The perigee full moon (May 6, 2012) was an impressive site near Globe Arizona USA. There were however, some wisp of clouds which ruined my photo opportunity. That means a watercolor will have to suffice. Done with watercolors and ink (which ran, …Sh#t ) and never to be used again Payne’s grey.

Ah! The dreaded Payne’s grey. Upset me so much, once upon a time, I composed this. (sing it to the tune “The night they discovered champagne”).
The Night I discovered Payne’s Grey
The Night I discovered Payne’s Grey
My Indigo was oot, Vermilion Kaput
The Night I discovered Payne’s Grey
Well, what was I to do, needing a darker hue
When suddenly a tube of the stuff, landed beside me with a thud.
Now everything I paint, becomes an awful pain
Each masterpiece transforms into a sea of blue/grey mud

Beautiful piece. Why such antagonism against Payne’s gray? it is so used by artists, I’ve heard so much about it, that I ordered mine from London, along with other Talens. I think it adds velvety midtones and compliments other colors.

True Nikira. I should have looked it up before splashing it around. Payne’s Grey is a mixture of ultramarine and black or of ultramarine and Sienna. Funny that when I mix my own black with ultramarine its transparency works much better than the Windsor and Newton tube that I have had forever. From the WN tube by itself, it is good for tonal work and depressing atmospheres like Chicago or NYC. Mixed with most any color though, and that color will die by turning chalky, or green, or both. It is an intense opaque color that demands respect of strength. I have found a good evergreen shade when it is mixed with New Gamboge. Thank you dear Uncle for the fine epitaph that I shall keep entombed with the WN tube. RIP. (smile)

In spite of the aforementioned dilemmas, I sure like the composition! Love moon scenes, aahhhoooooooh, she howled.
