Trees and form – Pencil

Another new thing for me to try. This is another “Watson” technique (see my recent post on Newhaven). Watson suggests the form of objects, such as trees, can be enhanced by using reflected light next to dark surfaces. In this case I have tried to leave a thin, light line at the left hand edge of the principal trees where the darker background meets. I’ve probably overdone things here as I am still trying to get used to sketching/shading with a pencil sharpened into a chisel point (One side has a flat surface for shading and, if you turn the pencil over, you can get a really thin sharp line). I shall persevere. I shall use this sketch to create a watercolour of this, my favourite refuge.
