Tree Study, Rowan – Intense
This is meant to complement a recent post of the Ash Tree. Rowan is the Scottish name for Mountain Ash. They are traditionally grown near the house to ward off evil spirits. It is considered bad luck to cut one of these down as their protection will be lost. This should come in handy in our village as at least one lady claims to be a witch. I once said to her, after she spoke at length about her beliefs, “You know. Years ago you would have been burned at the stake for comments like that.” With a smile she replied, “I was!” I have just planted another Rowan in my garden.

Interesting neighbor you have there, Bob! Love the drawing of the Ash.

Omg, Bob, I think, you answered my long term question. It looks exactly like рябина. Is it possible to eat berries only after it gets frosted, then it is not bitter? Compare http://www.google.com/search?q=Mountain+Ash+tree&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&prmd=ivns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=6FevTZ-HCI34gAe-8riKDA&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CBkQ_AUoAQ&biw=1211&bih=1080 and http://www.google.com/search?q=рябина&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&prmd=ivns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=flivTYqeN4qugQem65H3Cw&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CBIQ_AUoAQ&biw=1211&bih=1080
I use to make preserved fruits from it when I lived few months as hermit in russian village painting and reading. And from same black berries.

Dear Bob, I guess my comment was really stupid, this why it didn’t show in counts. :-/ Unless link is too long.

Nikira. What on earth are you on about? If you are referring to your comment in my previous post about the local conditions then I must say that I found this amusing while, at the same time, rather flattering. People, such as yourself, who take the trouble to offer feedback to items on this website are to be welcomed. I don’t always have enough hours in the day to write things about other’s paintings so tend not to do so, as much as I should, in case it looks as if I am ignoring some folks. However, when you compliment my country, its beauty and the colours of nature here, who could be anything but grateful. I am lucky to stay in a nice part of the world but, like everyone else, sometimes tend to think there is something better elsewhere. Your comments serve to remind me of my good fortune and help me to appreciate my own “back yard” (American expression
) But don’t just write about how you perceive Scotland. Visit it sometime.

This is really weird, because seems my comment is invisible, the one where I asked about Rowan tree. Is it visible to me only?
