Thank you very much for explanation. My box is not totally new, its been used, barely, so I dono how old is that. When it will come I will take picture and show you. I got it for 29 Euro including delivery, so for 18 Euros to be precise. I have Lukas 48 and it feels so spoiling, that I blush every time I use it. I was helping one architect, mixed colors for stained glass from just 3 crazy strong resin tints, it was enough to make many colors and shades. How different look of new and old watercolor boxes? Any design on the top?
Thanks.
What you’ve paid Nikira is a bargain. Used? Well, depends how were they used, but generally their quality remains the same after decades of use – not to worry.
Old box was far fancier. It has decent design with old and different logo in golden colour. The finish is mat black and it has fancier groves with golden line around. The new one looks cheaper and resembles that of W&N. The thumb-ring on the bottom side has a handy grove to fit in (so it is firmly secured in place) rather than loose one (as in new design and W&N). At the bottom there are 4 small “legs” giving it support. In short, it’s just better craftsmanship and I do prefer the old one over the new! Cardboard box on the new 48 set is really fancy though…
Oh, cool! Thank you so much, Ziza. Mine, I got it yesterday after we spoke, has this intricate golden design on the top with logo in gold and outlining of each of 5 boxes, but no legs on the bottom, just the ring. No logo inside. Mat finish. It is barely used, most colors seems untouched. I lifted each half pen and examined with magnifying glass as I do with antique pencils. It has logo but no number of the paint like Holbein does. Actually in my new Holbein set besides numbers it shows something in Japanese, numbers or words. Anyway, how old this set is, what do you think? It still has blue sticker on the bottom, saying 64-99 British pounds. Seller was not selling any other art stuff, just antiques, indicating she is not an expert in it. This price could be reselling it or original price. It is cheaper than today’s price on a market. Does they have markings in blue in England?
Nikira, I sent you photos of my boxes by mail. Please send some photos of yours for me to try to check (include painted colour chart).
The price 64.99 was probably original as they range about 60 today (including VAT), so they are a bit less expensive now.
If I recall properly they did not include number on the pans in the past (but I have to check that at home). Now they all have colour number on each pan. It’s a good thing if there is logo on the pan itself since otherwise they could fit any cheaper pans into the box (Cotman, Van Gogh or even some no-name paints).
I’m not sure what you mean by “blue marking”? BTW they are made in Holland and no matter where you bought them they should be the same (provided they are from the same period)
Today model Metal Starter Set includes: 24 x Pans Rembrandt Water Colour -Rembrandt reversible Brush Series 110 no.6 (round, extra fine point, red sable hair) Colours included in this set: – 207 (Cadmium Lemon) – 208 (Cadmium Yellow Light) – 238 (Gamboge) – 210 (Cadmium Yellow Dark) – 211 (Cadmium Orange) – 303 (Cadmium Red Light) – 306 (Cadmium Red Dark) – 336 (Permanent Madder Lake) – 366 (Quinacridone Rose) – 532 (Mauve) – 506 (Ultramarine Dark) – 511 (Cobalt Blue) – 534 (Cerulean Blue) – 508 (Prussian Blue) – 662 (Permanent Green) – 616 (Viridian) – 645 (Hooker Green Dark) – 623 (Sap Green) – 227 (Yellow Ochre) – 411 (Burnt Sienna) – 409 (Burnt Umber) – 408 (Raw Umber) – 416 (Sepia) – 708 (Payne Grey)
No mail from you?! OK. I checked the pans. The old ones have Talens Rembrandt logo embosed on the bottom side and no pait number. The new ones have only Talens logo on the bottom (no Rembrandt written) and there is a paint bumber printed on the front side preceeded by letter “R” (for Rembrandt). That’s the only visible difference between Rembrandt and Van Gogh pans – the latter looks the same exept the letter preceeding the number is “G”. The old boxes used to have a yellowish cardboard leafelet fit in the brush area, between rows of pans, with paint names printed in front of each pan…
So far so much…

Thank you, I took a pic. Uploading now. Looks like mine old. But how old? In newer Talens set of paints different. No white, in mine it is.
