Frosty Morning – Watercolour and Pastel
Combining watercolour with my new found pastels. This was done a couple of weeks ago as I tried to get to grips with my new stuff. The mornings are a bit warmer these days although experience reminds me that there is still time cooler weather. We even had snow in May a couple of years ago and it regularly snows up in the Scottish mountains all year round.

Well Uncle Bob, I think you have outdone yourself with this one. The composition is great, the sky is fantastic, and the feeling of cold and frost with just a little bit of the warm pink is FABULOUS!!! What can I say except I think this is one of your BEST yet—or at least it speaks to me. Just can’t get over how FANTASTIC your color combo is here.

Aha! Rose. I am undone! As I strive to find the “magic method” of this hobby I try different media all the time and this one was actually one which almost got away from me. I like to pinch stuff from other, better artists and the sky is based on the sort of thing Rowland Hilder used to do with the hard edges. As to the rest of the composition I overworked different areas with hard pastels until the result was completely different from that at the beginning. I was unhappy with the final result but now – you heap so much praise on me I feel that I may be onto something. Trouble is I cannot remember what I overworked. Perhaps, one day in the future, someone will discover another drawing beneath the surface and folks will say, “That was from his earlier period”. Many thanks for the kindness. I’m away to the local hospital to sneak a wee shot of their x-ray machine.

I agree – this is a gem…And my grandson has bravely started using some long kept paints that he was saving for rainy days…

Thanks Grandpa. Will now go and look out some more prehistoric art stuff to inflict more pain on you.

What have I ever done to deserve this? What did I do wrong raising my grandson? Pain? No. It’s anguish…
