I had a day to walk around Tokyo on a nice but cold day. This is Shinjuku Gyoen, what was for a while the Imperial Gardens. Drawing this, I ran into the interesting problem of how to draw realistically bushes that are pruned to be round blobs. I tried fading out the texture but can’t say it totally solved the problem.

Thanks, Nikira. While I was there, I remembered your raving about the Holbein sumi style inks (http://www.holbein-works.co.jp/english/0419.html)and so picked up a set. I hope to try them next month after a larger project.

Not ink, Shin Gansai watercolors. My 22 year old set contains more interesting colors, than my new Shin Gansai set. Was not able to see what you got? You should of gotten Yatate, while there. That is very cool. On my wish list.

Hi Nikira. They are pans of paint, not ink. The English on it says “Holbein Cake Color for Sumi-Painting” and the set looks just like the set in the link. It also looks a bit like the set on your website. I wish I had known about the yatate when I was there. The sumi ink section was huge–there was a whole aisle dedicated to ink sticks.
