Cottages, Addison Farm Road – Watercolour
There are many small farms and former farms where I stay. In years gone by the farm workers stayed in “tied cottages” (the cottages came with the job and the workers were tied to the lease).. This row of cottages has probably been sold to private individuals but they probably look much as they did 100 years ago. I thought they looked nice with the snow all around.
As Edinburgh expands, its boundaries swallow up lots of rural areas and these cottages are now just on the edge of the city about five miles from our small village of Ratho. I suppose that, one day, the village itself will be part of the city – but I won’t be here to see it.

Uncle Bob- Another beautiful snow- brrr painting! I love it, such a mood of quiet after the snowfall. I also enjoy your descriptions with each picture.

Thank you for this, Candace. I’ve been experimenting with a lot of different ideas from Roland Hilder who glazed washes of thin black over initial washes of other colours – in this case burnt sienna. Quite glad this seems to be working. The descriptions are designed to distract from the actual painting
Have a great time at the end of 2010 and a happy 2011 – Bob
