Not a great drawing, but I like what I felt while I was making it. It was just like music. He was singin “Raglan Road” at my ear, his eyes closed, lost in his own music. I simply had to draw him. Even if I knew he never existed but in my head…

Luke Kelly, with The Dubliners, singing Raglan Road is, indeed beautiful but have you heard Van Morrison’s version with The Chieftains? This is a link to it, but its a very poor version. You can get the “proper track” from itunes. Kelly was a great guy. I saw him a few times when the group came to Edinburgh. On one occasion he appeared wearing a pair of trousers – one leg green and the other orange just to show he was not biased in favour of the two religious sectors who adopted those colours ie Orange for protestant faiths and green for Irish Catholic. A superb stunt which only he could have gotten away with. As to Patrick Kavanagh. I have books of his poetry which sits comfortably with its place in Irish history. I have also “sat” beside the great man on his statue in Dublin

Actually, the first version I’ve heard was the Chieftains+Morrison’s one!!! And I’ve heard Sinead O’Connor and Lorena McKennit singing this song too. But it looks as if the red-haired man made a version of every irish song in the world!!! Tip “Luke Kelly” at YouTube, and you can find EVERYTHING. Millions of songs!!!
By the way, I sat by Patrick Kavanagh too. But at these time, I didn’t knew who he was. Now, I know he was a great poet…
Next time in Dublin I will present my respects to him. And Luke Kelly too, of course…
What a funny story about his trousers, by the way! It looks as he was a very special man…
