I was at a local Las Vegas’ casino outside of the Strip, called Texas Station Casino. While waiting for my mother finish playing her machine, I decided to do a watercolour sketch of the video slots nearby…

Very nice line art…and colors. BUT my main question is… REALLY! you were able to sit and draw/paint in a casino with out someone stopping you? I am SO criticized by my family for drawing in public.

Hmmm… I don’t get the deal with that you CAN’t draw in the casino? It not like you are taking a photograph or anything.. No one never stops me or mentions about that I can’t draw, it just a public place like anywhere else. You are not the only one asks me about this.. =)

There are many public places where you cannot draw or take photographs these days, mainly because of security issues and “rights” issues. I was at a merry-go-round a few years ago taking photos of kids riding the ponies and was stopped because they claimed they had the “rights” to pictures of those ponies. I was also at a very public spot in So. Calif with shops and banks and other public businesses and was told that I could not take photos without written permission from the owners of the center. So actually, I am surprised that casinos seem to be quite open for sketching.
At an American Indian Pow-wow it’s even worse. Not only do you have to register your camera before you can attend, but you have to ask and pay each individual you take photos of, and you may take crowd photos only at certain times. They get pretty bent out of shape if you don’t adhere to the rules, even thou the rules are often contradictory and murky.
So I think it’s jut a sign of the times we live in, with less and less freedoms for all sorts of reasons.

I like your drawings.
I drew in a casino once and people told me they were surprised I was “allowed” to do it as well.
(?) no one even noticed at the casino. the security passed by and looked once but that was all.
BUT
again
very nice work!
