I’m training self to see and “draw” in a new way: looking for shapes, masses and value rather than lines. I did this with no outlines, and took my glasses off, thus eliminating detail from my vision (!). Used pan pastels on a sponge-covered palette knife and a kneaded earaser. These materials prevent me from falling into the habit of making lines and filling them in.

This seems a worthwhile exercise although I am useless at this sort of thing. Everyone says, “Draw with the brush” or “put in negative spaces first”. Wish I could. Could luck with this, Margie. Don’t forget where you put your glasses.

Thanks for the good luck wishes. It really is a different way for me, and taking off my glasses is a great help. I can’t put in negative spaces first. But I am really looking for shapes first, rather than contour – quite a challenge. I’ll keep you posted.
