Final pages of Sketchbook #11 (Moleskine #2). On the right are some preliminary sketches of my ultimately ‘rejected’ idea for this year’s Street Painting Festival in San Rafael, CA. It was deemed ‘too controversial!’ O, the humanity!
See the final ‘rejected’ sketch here: http://bit.ly/aiIUMx
(Can’t post it to this site as it’s not in a Moleskine.)

I don’t see anything “controversial” about this, and it’s no different from an editorial in the local paper, but then, those in power are determined to turn everything into a shade of dirty gray.

Yeah, i really don’t think it’s all that controversial. but i think a lot of festival sponsorship money comes from developers, banks, corporate interests etc. and the folks on the submission review board didn’t want to make waves. kinda sad.

What! You dare criticize commercialism, advertising and the exploitation of nature in the name of Commerce? Huh, no wonder they didn’t think that was suited for a “family audience”. I mean who’s going to buy their [insert random brand name], if kids don’t get brainwashed at an early age?
Really. I am glad to be informed of what is considered “controversial” in art, these days. It is quite an eye opener! O-O

Ha! Well it’s all coming out ok in the end. I’ve managed to drum up enough support ( http://bit.ly/buMzk0 ) for a medium size square, not the mondo one i wanted to do, but hey beggars can’t be choosers.
