The April 2010 Challenge: Wish you were here
Well, I highly wouldn’t encourage you to be here.. But, I don’t have much choice for this kind of theme..
Vegas Style- At least this is an opportunity to do some sketching on people playing the slots.. I’m sure you don’t get this very often unless if you visit the few major gambling hubs like Biloxi/Gulfport, Mississippi; Atlantic City, New Jersey; Reno, Nevada; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Las Vegas, Nevada…
Other than that… It is very lifeless living here when you are a local.. There is no culture, no art inspirations, no museums. Its a big brown desert wasteland with dull-looking mountains and just right in the middle of nowhere, while the better cities (Salt Lake City, Los Angeles, San Diego, Phoenix, and San Francisco) nearby are 5-8 hours drive. Oh, it just depressing while there are no greens and lovely trees you could try sketching/painting…
Alright, I’ll stop rambling on… lol I’m sure you will get the point..

This is a wonderful sketch! I’m glad to see that it really is okay to sketch in a casino. I’ve been to Vegas many times to work at conventions, I think it’s fascinating. The casinos have some really great art exhibits, and the mountains can be beautiful at different times of the day. What about the Grand Canyon. It’s close to Vegas. And Flagstaff and Reno. I think you live in a wonderfully diverse part of the country.

Lol, I’ve been there and done that already.. Grand Canyon, Sedona, Flagstaff, Death Valley, Reno, Valley of Fire, Red Rock Canyon, etc.. However, it maybe fascinating for you because it is best to visit here. As a local, once you have already done everything and there is nothing you can really do out here.. It really ruins it..

I agree with Susan that no matter where you live there are always fascinating things to draw and paint when you practice with an artist’s eye. I agree that it can be difficult, however. When I travel to Reno for my monthly shopping expedition I have to really concentrate to find something to inspire me, but I always do find something and then want to go back. And when I lived there for three years I managed to always find interesting bits. I remember one year I sketched a neighborhood cottonwood tree in different light and in different seasons, with different mediums and even different color schemes, and I grew to love that tree. On the other hand, I’ve been through Las Vegas but never stopped there since gambling and artificial entertainment doesn’t interest me in the least—but I’m sure I could find tons of stuff to draw. Every city has it’s charming corners. One has to just seek them out, I think.

By the way, I think this is a lovely drawing of just how people look when they play the slots– concentrating and frowning. The insides of casinos are not pleasant places to me, but for people watching they can be fascinating. It would even be interesting to see a whole series on that subject.
