Eekhoorntje. This squirrel was eating the nuts we left in the birdhouse. The birds didn’t seem to mind much. He was eating very concentrated, he stayed long enough for me to draw and paint this from behind my window.

I see, as you’ve said, you’ve got one of Bob’s squirrels. It got a bit thinner due to travelling efforts to reach you from Scotland. But it sure works on getting chubbier again…

Nice painting Rene. We actually had trouble with grey squirrels taking over the birds table, so much so that we’ve scrapped the thing and now hang seeds in squirrel-proof feeders in surrounding trees. The squirrels were eating everything in sight including Margaret’s bulbs – have they no fear?

Squirrel proof feeders? Never heard about them. We don’t have these grey squirrels yet; but I saw them in New York, they are very cheeky.

This is the sort of thing Rene:

I tried hanging these from lengths of strong twine but the wee devils cut through that so I tried them on wire, as suggested. Even this didn’t work as they forced their way in. I’ve given up putting out nuts and now only put out seeds which the B…..s don’t like. We don’t have red squirrels where I live, only greys which are considered to be nuisances especially if they get into your loft space. They can climb up brick walls and enter open windows. Known locally as “Tree rats”.

Looks more like a birdcage. Actually, I heard that the red squirrels are nearly extinct in the UK, and replaced by the American grey type. Is that true?

You heard correctly Rene. Although not extinct Reds are being forced into smaller and small colonies by the greys. It is said that all greys are descendents of a pair presented to Queen Victoria. We should learn to avoid interfering with nature. This link might give you some idea of the problem: http://www.forestry.gov.uk/forestry/Redsquirrel
