Gardnerville is a town in Nevada which is the last town before one drives up in elevation on Hwy 395. It is all ranch land, with soil that’s not really great for growing things but perfect for cattle. The wind and dust subsided during the night and instead we had a sprinkling of new snow in the mountains. It was a beautiful day to be driving.

Beautiful country, the west of the US is so great, I love living here. Could live in Scotland were Bob is but the west is great.
Curious what kind of pen do you use?

I love your landscapes. Do you do these on location or in a studio? If on location, can you tell me how long it takes?

Hi Andrew! I paint these on location, and the time involved is usually 1/2 to 1-1/2 hours. Sometimes I finish them later if there isn’t enough time to finish on the spot. But my favorite thing in all the world is to be outdoors with my paints, even when the weather isn’t ideal.
However, I do use photographs in the winter when I’m snowbound at home, or I take a photograph of the scene I just painted to compare to the actual scene later, or if I want to paint another version of the same scene. This time, however, my camera broke and so these sketches are all I have of that particular trip.

PS: This particular painting took about 45 minutes since it’s fairly simple, and I added the cows later in the day when I got to my motel.
